The Same Difference program aims to reduce homophobia and transphobia and celebrate sexual and gender diversity in schools through a comprehensive and multi-strategic approach.
Community education sessions
Community education sessions explore discrimination based on sexuality and gender, with the panel speaker stories being a vital part of the delivery of the session. Same Difference panel speakers provide a human face to the issues faced by LGBTIQ young people by sharing their experience of homophobia and transphobia in the school setting.
Sessions are delivered in schools, youth centres and other educational settings. Sessions are generally 60 to 90 minutes in length and include a range of activities.
During this session participants will learn about:
- discrimination based on sexuality and gender
- the lived experience of a LGBTIQ young person
- developing a safe and supportive environment for young people of all sexualities and genders.
The strength of this project is that it arms young people with the tools to challenge discrimination by using a number of interactive learning activities and student-led discussions coupled with the panel speaker's life story. These activities and discussions build knowledge, empathy and understanding in the audience, setting the scene for the panel speaker to deliver a life story exploring their lived experience of discrimination based on sexuality and/or gender.
