This course aims to build the capacity of educators of year 7-12 students to provide evidence-based education about contraception.  The session enables educators to develop their knowledge of the range of current forms of contraception available, considerations around their use and features resources and practical examples of engaging teaching strategies with an emphasis on creating supportive and inclusive learning environments.

By the end of this course participants will be able to:

  • State the importance of contraception for individuals and society
  • Identify a range of contraceptive methods and considerations for selection of contraception
  • Describe strategies for an inclusive approach to teaching contraceptive awareness
  • Access  a range of learning activities and resources to teach contraceptive awareness
  • Support young people to access health services and reliable sources of information
  • Review information on fertility, pregnancy, pregnancy options and support for young parents

  • Years 7 – 12 PDHPE teachers and coordinator
  • Staff in wellbeing and support roles
  • School counsellors, year advisors and staff in leadership roles
  • Presenters of Stage 6 health, wellbeing and safety programs such as Life Ready
  • Casual teachers and pre-service teachers

One session of 1.5 hours

Course structure

The webinar is an interactive learning experience, and it includes opportunities for professional discussion and to participate in learning and reflection activities.

Participants will receive a workbook containing interactive classroom activities and resources for use with students.

Technical requirements:

  • Their own computer or other device to use during the session
  • Internet access
  • A webcam or video camera in the device
  • Speakers or headphones
Eligibility / Pre-requisites: 

Teachers working with students in years 7-12 or currently working towards a qualification to do so. Course is also open to staff working in school welfare, health, wellbeing and leadership roles.

Participants need access to a PC or laptop with a working camera and microphone as this is an interactive course.  Phones are not recommended. 

Recognition / Accreditation: 

Participants will receive a Statement of Attendance.
